Javiera Estrada: "I love flowers! Simply, they make me happy. They are beautiful and I believe they energetically lift the vibration of any space."

In our dark times, the flower artworks of Mexican-born artist Javiera Estrada shine all the more brightly. Javiera lives in California and works in the mediums of photography, sculpture, installation and film with very different inspirations. She has a special attention to the beauty of flowers and her name is mentioned among the most famous flower artists in the world. However, a great contrast to this and just as beautiful are her nude images.

The artist is in search of the spiritual and believes that every work of art is a self-portrait, a physical expression of the inner, nameless world that inhabits our soul. Photography is her most important medium, and for her the sound of the camera clicking is the link between the real and the ethereal. Javiera Estrada believes in creativity in its purest form, which is always in her life and can manifest itself in a beautiful dinner or even in a massive oil painting.

In Pandemic Time 2020, she also started to develop her own fashion line with Waste clothes from her closet that she painted.

What were your paths into art?

Since I was a young child, I knew I wanted to be an artist. The inspiration was firstly channeled into painting, then dance, then music, and finally landing on photography. I believe creativity, in its purest form, is always present-sometimes that is manifested into a beautiful dinner or a massive canvas oil painting.

"My mission is to break the old adage that an artist has to stick to one style, medium, and theme in order to be successful."

What do you call your style and what is your mission?

It’s difficult to define one’s own style. Especially someone like myself who loves to experiment and dabble across multiple mediums. However, I do believe your “ style“ is inherently the essence of who you are. In that sense, my style comes in a myriad of variations depending on my mood. I am a curious person who likes to delve deep into a plethora of ideas, themes, and mediums. Sometimes, traditional black and white nude photography is my style and other times, all I want to shoot are extremely colorful and explosive florals. My mission is to break the old adage that an artist has to stick to one style, medium, and theme in order to be successful. It might be a longer road, but at least I’m inspired throughout the whole journey.

What do flowers mean to you?

I love flowers! Simply, they make me happy. They are beautiful and I believe they energetically lift the vibration of any space.

What is your favourite flower?

Oh, there are too many amazing flowers to single one out! Off the top of my head, here aresome of my favorites: star gazing lilies, anthuriums, peonies, and pink roses.

"My philosophy on fashion is--buy quality over quantity and infuse old pieces with new life by altering them in one way or another.

You have a beautiful fashion collection. What is your philosophy?

Thank you! During the pandemic in 2020, I started doing a lot of spring cleaning and it was during this time that I started to up-cycle old pieces of clothing that no longer inspired me. Waste is something that really bothers me and I always try and re-use things for as long as I can. This is how I started painting on leather. After painting a leather bag and coat, I received so many compliments that I decided to create a whole wearable art line. My philosophy on fashion is--buy quality over quantity and infuse old pieces with new life by altering them in one way or another.

Where can one buy your fashion?

On my website. https://www.javieraestrada.com/metalrat2020

"It’s imperitive that my studio be in my homespace as I am visual and need to be surrounded by my work. "

What is your current project?

Currently, I am working on a commission piece from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. It’s a massive project which is taking me over three months to complete. Every year, the college produces a symposium and invites an artist. This year, I am collaborating with the students to create a huge tapestry from cyanotypes—one of the first photographic processes that produces a cyan-blue print and was invented in 1842. Of course, this is a medium I don’t have any experience in so it’s been quite the journey learning as I’m creating. I love being challenged and this project is full of them!

Where is your studio located?

I have a home studio in Culver City California. It’s imperitive that my studio be in my homespace as I am visual and need to be surrounded by my work.
